Before supply chains had a name, lapis crossed continents.
Miners extracted it in the mountains of Badakhshan. Caravans carried it through Central Asia. Merchants financed its passage. Craftspeople ground it into a blue more valuable than gold.
No one participant controlled the journey. Its value depended on a network of promises—material, timing, knowledge, and trust. Fashion still works this way.
